About FabLab
A FabLab is a network of experimental community workshops equipped with a wide range of fabrication tools — from digital to analog.
A FabLab is a digital fabrication workshop for play, creation, teaching, and invention — a place for learning and innovation. FabLabs provide access to the environment, skills, materials, and advanced technology that lets anyone, anywhere, make (almost) anything.

Who we are
FabLab Japan Network is a network connecting FabLabs and making activities in Japan and beyond.
FabLab Japan Network is the Japanese-language community within the global FabLab network. It brings together people from many backgrounds — students, faculty, researchers, designers, engineers, lawyers, and others working in companies or as freelancers.
We started in spring 2010 as "FabLab Japan" with the goal of establishing FabLabs in Japan and spreading the culture and skills of making. While communicating the potential of FabLabs and personal fabrication, we have explored what FabLabs should look like in Japan. Today, as a framework that connects the activities of FabLabs in Japan and around the world, we have renamed the group "FabLab Japan Network," and we focus on three core activities:
- International collaboration: exchange with FabLabs worldwide, dispatch of personnel, and more
- Domestic collaboration: strengthening ties among FabLabs in Japan, supporting new FabLabs, and organizing the Japan FabLab Conference
- Communication: publishing information about FabLabs and operating the FJN website

From digital fabrication to handcrafting, we support a variety of personal fabrications at our cozy workshop.
FabLab Kuriyama
Based in Kuriyama, Hokkaido, FabLab Kuriyama is a public maker space dedicated to "fostering the next generation of town-builders." We work hand-in-hand with schools and the local community to shape the future together.
Kanto
FabLab Kamakura
Based in a restored 130+ year-old former sake brewery, it supports STEM education with local and educational partners. One of Japan’s first Fab Labs.
FabLab Kanda Nishikicho
Leveraging the insights gained from our activities as a community-oriented Fab Lab, we continue our efforts to implement the principles of “Fab” into existing eco-systems such as education and industry.
FabLab Kannai
It was established at the 2013 global Fab Lab conference (FAB9) in August. It serves as a Fab Academy Node (a hosting lab).
Ota Fab
A privately operated fab run by a corporation, with a co-working space on-site. Our workshop is supported by diverse group of members.
FabLab Shinagawa
Promoting 3D-printed assistive devices to empower everyone to improve their own lives. We are a creative hub that prioritizes the process of 'Co-Creating' with users and experts.

FabLab Minatomirai
Located at Kanagawa University, this is Japan’s first university-based Fab Lab. It serves as a venue for interaction and co-creation between students and local residents.
Chubu
FabLab Hamamatsu / TAKE-SPACE
A Fab Lab in a regional city surrounded by farmland. We aim to manage a Fab Lab where anyone who enjoys local crafting can drop by.
FabLab Nagano
This is the FabLab located within the Faculty of Education at Shinshu University. It is the only FabLab in the education field and is run primarily by faculty members and students in the field of technology.
FabLab Tsubame-Sanjo
We build a platform where people can realize their desire to learn and create, and we cultivate individuals who can turn their ideas into reality.
FabLab Nagoya
This is a lab located in the office of an open-source hardware company. It's also one of nodes of Fab Academy.
FabLab TONAMI
As the home of CoderDojo Tonami, we welcome many young makers. Run by a design studio, we also work on local community challenges and offer a large collection of design books available to borrow.
Kinki
FabLab Kitakagaya
Fab Lab Kitakagaya was established as the first Fab Lab in the Kansai region. It operates under a unique “Banto” system, where users themselves take part in maintaining and managing the facility, and engages in project-based activities.
FabLab Nishiharima
A unique FabLab based in a former elementary school in Sayo, Hyogo, building our own machines like large-scale CNCs. As a Fab Academy Node, we offer world-class education programs.
FabLab Kobe
A small FabLab in the port city of Kobe, connecting universities, schools, children, and the local community through making.
Chugoku & Shikoku
FabLab Yamaguchi
Collaborating with YCAM and schools to develop tech education in Yamaguchi City.
FabLab Hiroshima-Akitakata
Hiroshima’s first digital fabrication facility. It has released an open-source “Circular Gacha”—a capsule toy machine that uses plastic bottle caps—to help expand the reach of the circular economy.
Kyushu & Okinawa
FabLab Oita
We collaborate with schools, museums, local artists, and businesses. Just a 5-minute walk from Oita Station, people from all backgrounds and fields gather here.
FabLab Saga
With the motto “Realize your Idea,” we support everyone from individuals to businesses in creating exactly what they want. In addition to workshops, we also offer custom development and manufacturing services.
FabLab Itoshima
Based in Itoshima, our FabLab connects art, digital fabrication, recycling, and international exchange, bringing local communities and artists together through hands-on making.

Frequently asked questions
Q: I want to use a FabLab to make something / visit a FabLab
Each FabLab is operated differently. Some require advance reservations, so please check the usage conditions on each FabLab's website. Note that FabLabs fundamentally emphasize users learning how to use the equipment themselves and fabricating on their own — they are not general 'digital fabrication services.' Please understand this distinction in advance.
Q: I want to establish a new FabLab
For those considering launching a new FabLab, we have compiled a guide for getting started. Please refer to the document linked below for details.
Q: I want to use the name "FabLab ___" / I would like permission to use the name
FabLab Japan Network is a community for information exchange among FabLab-related people. It is not in a position to certify FabLabs or grant permission to use the name. By international consensus, anyone who meets the conditions for using the FabLab name may use it. (In other words, you do not need to join FabLab Japan Network to call yourself a FabLab.) In Japan, the trademark has been registered, but this is not to monopolize the rights — it is to maintain the healthy use of the proper noun "FabLab." As long as the internationally agreed FabLab conditions are met, we have no intention of taking legal action against activities that use the "FabLab" name. For details about how the trademark was obtained and how it is handled, please see the link below.
Q: I want to join FabLab Japan Network
FabLab Japan Network is open to anyone — FabLab operators, those preparing to launch a new FabLab, and anyone who sympathizes with FabLab activities and wishes to support them. To maintain face-to-face relationships, joining requires a recommendation from a FabLab operator. If you wish to join, please contact a FabLab in Japan and share your interest with them. See the link below for details on how the network is run.
Q: Please list my lab on this website
On this site we list, as FabLabs in Japan, those labs operated by FabLab Japan Network members that have officially declared they are open. Please refer first to the question above ("I want to join FabLab Japan Network") and consider joining FJN.
Q: I would like to request an interview or lecture / discuss a collaboration
For interview or lecture requests about FabLabs, or for collaboration inquiries, please contact the person in charge at each FabLab directly. If it is difficult to determine which lab to approach, you may contact FabLab Japan Network and we can introduce an appropriate facility or individual.
